Lyon's hopes of retaining their Ligue 1 title were dealt a serious blow on Sunday as they were defeated by Lille in the final match of the season.

The result saw Lille secure their first top-flight title since 2008, while Lyon finished second and will now look to qualify for Europe next season.

In the end, it was Jonathan David who provided the decisive moment for Lille, scoring twice in their 4-1 win over Lyon.

David, who joined the club from Dynamo Kiev last summer, has been one of the standout performers this season, netting 19 goals in all competitions.

His two goals against Lyon ensured that Lille would be crowned champions, with David celebrating his goal with a wild celebration.

"It's a great feeling," David said after the game. "It's always difficult to play against Lyon, but I'm happy for my team and for myself."

With the win, Lille also secured their place in the Europa League, meaning that they will be facing a tough group stage next year.

For Lyon, however, there is still hope for next season. They will be looking to bounce back from this defeat and try to finish higher up the table.

Despite the disappointment of losing out on the title, Lille manager Rudi Garcia praised his players' performance and dedication.
